Beautiful Salzburg

We left on the train to Salzburg and were blessed with lush green scenery along the way.  The train reaching 140 KM/Hr got us across the country in 2.5 hours.  The train station was smaller and more homey feeling.  A 15 minute walk along the small town buildings with little traffic led us to our hotel.

Our initial feel of the town was so positive and welcoming and only became stronger as we set out to explore our new location.  Salzburg is beautifully located along a flowing river, nestled in the hills and sharp cliffs in a lush valley.  A short walk from our hotel brought us to the cobbled streets and historic buildings that you would expect.  We found a cute restaurant for lunch and enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere before we set out for a quick overview of the city.  As we were walking we saw a pathway and stairs that seemed to call us up so being the adventurous type we climbed the steep incline.  There were carved our niches with the stations of the cross as were climbed so we figured there would be a church ahead.  Arriving at the top we did find a small church but the view was an even more spectacular site of the city.  We headed down the other side through winding stairs, passing the entrances to homes carved into the side of the hill.

Across the river was the central old town area where we wandered with lots of others tourist in and out of several shops.  Being a people watcher, it was a field day of activity in all sorts of languages.  There are several gorgeous buildings from hundreds of years ago that are still alive today with activity.  As we walked we found another unmarked road leading up, not sure where is would go we ventured on.  Again we were surprised at our discovery of a beautiful church with a well maintained and elaborate cemetery within the courtyard; many from long ago, but one from last year.

The weather has become very cold, a slight misty rain and very dark clouds.  We located a nice looking Italian restaurant (it was the Gnocchi in Gorgonzola sauce that drug me in).  The food was fantastic, who knew you could get great Italian food in Austria?

Pretty long day and ready for the bed so we headed back to the hotel.

We think this may be the cemetery they used in Sound of Music
just before they fled to Switzerland
