A beautiful drive through Tuscany :)

We left Cortona (Under the Tuscan Sun) and headed to Volterra (Twilight series) with a leisurely drive through the countryside.  (Ed's definition of leisurely means several stops- Annette's white knuckles and telling him to SLOW DOWN didn't see it as quite so leisurely) With a fairly warm morning and some highly sought after sun we head out (with a new map in hand).  Driving the little Lancia 5 speed is kind of a kick; it is peppy and easy to maneuver. HA!

The hills, farms and open fields are so hard to describe and pictures only can capture so much.  There are hundreds of stonewalled villas dotting the rolling hills.  The communities are scattered and spread out but there is always a little town somewhere in the center of all these farms.  Often the road goes right through the center of the towns and the streets are sometimes barely passable with two cars.  It is fun to see the people walking, talking out their windows and watching the cars pass by.

We found several very special spots where Annette did her best to try to capture the beauty through the camera lens.  It will be fun to get back home and examine the pictures more closely and maybe even make several prints for our home.

Pictures below are various shots taken along the way
from Cortona to Volterra

A stop in Montipuliciano

Gathering place of the past

Trying to capture the villa with the poppies in front

Heading for a quick stop in Montalcino
huge wine country - hundreds of vineyards

What a great scene - had to do a u-turn for this one!

Snuck behind the gate to capture this shot

Awesome fortress

Wells are common in every town

Driving into Volterra - above the clouds

We found some of Jaie's people - well, maybe

Funny - husband stayed ahead of his wife on this
very steep cobbled street.  Probably a daily occurrence

Homes in Volterra

Found this little gem on a walk along the hilltop town
with clouds through the doorway

Clouds and the sun reflecting off the homes

The swallows come out at sunset
